Beside Action, Mystery and Suspense is one of my favorite genre. In contrast to action films that usually bring tension and admiration when watching, usually Mystery film will make us to think and speculate what is storyline and ending of the film. Something that impressed me with mystery movies is the complexity of the story. The films from this category is usually a heavy film that racked brains. Sometimes there are some movies that should be watched 2 times before i can understand the story. The following is the list of best Mystery and Suspense films based on my opinion.

Note : This List is updated periodically. Just bookmarked this page for further view

Fight Club

I thinks this is one of Edward Norton and Brad Pitt best performance in a film. You will encounter couple of surprise when watching this movie. Fight Club is a film about a nameless man named Norton (played by Norton) who is automobile company employee who suffers from insomnia. His doctor refuses to give him medication and advises him to visit a support group to witness more severe suffering. He becomes addicted to attending support groups. He then forms a “fight club” with soap maker Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt) that he knows from airplane. He becomes embroiled in a relationship with him and a woman named Marla Singer (Bonham Carter)

This is another brilliant Brad Pitt performance in film. This film is about two detective film, David Mills (Brad Pitt) and William Somerset (Morgan Freeman) who try to investigate and solve a unique crime case, a serial killer who justifies his crimes as absolution for the world’s ignorance of the Seven Deadly Sins : gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath, pride, lust, and envy. The sin of Gluttony comes first and the murderer’s terrible capacity is graphically demonstrated in the dark and subdued tones characteristic of film noir. The seasoned and cultured Sommerset researches the Seven Deadly Sins in an effort to understand the killer’s modus operandi while green Detective Mills scoffs at his efforts to get inside the mind of a killer.

Inception

This the most brilliant movie that ever created. This film offer imagination, complexity and parallel storyline. I really amazed how Christoper Nolan created this film. The film tell a story about skilled thief named Dom Cobb. Dom Cobb is absolute best in extraction, stealing valuable secrets during the dream state. Cobb’s rare ability has made him an international fugitive and cost him everything he has ever loved. Now Cobb is being offered a chance at redemption. One last job could give him his life back but only if he can accomplish the impossible-inception. Instead of the perfect heist, Cobb and his team of specialists have to pull off the reverse: their task is not to steal an idea but to plant one. If they succeed, it could be the perfect crime.

Memento

One of Christoper Nolan’s masterpiece that released on 2000. This film offers something really different among common movie. If the movie usually start from the beginning to the end, then this film is totally reverse. It will show you the ending first and will reverse to the beginning. The story is really complex and it needs full concentration to just understand about the story. I personally need to watch the film twice to understand the story. This movie is about a man named Leonard, an ex-insurance investigator who can no longer build new memories, as he attempts to find the murderer of his wife, which is the last thing he remembers.

The Prestige

Another Christoper Nolan’s Masterpiece that created on 2004. This film is starred by Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale. The story is about two magician who compete each other to become the greatest magician in London. The film is set on 19th century. Robert Angier (Hugh Jackman), his wife Julia McCullough and Alfred Borden actually are friends and perform a magic show together. But because Julia accidentally dies during a performance, Robert blames Alfred for her death and then they become enemies. Both become famous and rival magicians, sabotaging the performance of the other on the stage. When Alfred performs a successful trick, Robert becomes obsessed trying to disclose the secret of his competitor with tragic consequences.

Sherlock Holmes : A Game of Shadows

The second movie of the legendary detective, Sherlock Holmes. This time Sherlock Holmes and his longtime trusted associate, Doctor Watson must face their arch-nemesis, Professor Moriarty (Jared Harris). Actually i still prefer the first movie than the sequel. There is no something amazing in this second movie. It’s like just a common detective case. But Sherlock Holmes still worth to watch. In this film, Holmes must investigate several murders, terrorist attacks, and business acquisitions, that he has connected to Moriarty. This time, Holmes must use his genius brain again to face Moriarty that try to kill Watson and Mary if Holmes interference continues.

Shutter Island

Another Leonardo De Caprio movie that i like so much. This film is created based on best-selling novel by Dennis Lehane. The story is about U.S. marshal Teddy Daniels (Leonardo De Caprio) that is assigned to investigate the disappearance of a patient from Boston’s Shutter Island Ashecliffe Hospital. He’s been pushing for an assignment on the island for personal reasons. Teddy’s shrewd investigating skills soon provide a promising lead, but the hospital refuses him access to records he suspects would break the case wide open. As a hurricane cuts off communication with the mainland, more dangerous criminals escape in the confusion, and the puzzling, improbable clues multiply, Teddy begins to doubt everything include his memory, his partner, even his own sanity.

Identity

I watched this movie based on my friend recommendation. My friend said that this is a good film and similar like Shuter Island movie. And what she said is true. The film is start with several strangers that gather in one motel. There are various people in the motel from limo driver, television star, parents with a young son, a cop transporting a dangerous convict, a beautiful call girl, a couple of young newlyweds, and a motel manager. They are caught up in a severe rainstorm and stuck at a motel for one day. Soon they realize they may be at the motel for another reason when one by one, people start getting killed off. As tensions flare and fingers are pointed, they have to get to the bottom of why they’re there. Meanwhile in an undisclosed location, a psychiatrist is trying to prove the innocence of a man accused of murder in an eleventh hour trial.

Butterfly Effect

This is one of my most favorite movie. This film is starring Ashton Kutcher and Amy Smart. Like the title, this film is about a popular principle in chaos theory which states that in any dynamic system, small initial differences may, over time, lead to large unforeseen consequences. The story of the film tell abou 20-year-old student named Evan Treborn (Ashton Kutcher), with Smart as his childhood sweetheart Kayleigh Miller (Amy Smart). He finds he has the ability to travel back in time to inhabit his former self and change the present. Having been the victim of several childhood traumas aggravated by stress-induced memory losses, he attempts to set things right for himself and his friends, but there are unintended consequences for all. The film draws heavily on flashbacks of the cast’s lives at ages 7 and 13, and presents several alternate present-day outcomes as Evan attempts to change the past, before settling on a final outcome.

The Uninvited

This film is similar to Shutter Island movie. Even not as good as Shutter Island, but the idea of the film is same. It’s the story about a girl, Anna who tries to commit suicide and is sent to a mental institution for treatment after the death of her ill mother in a fire. Ten months later, Anna still cannot remember what had happened on the night her mother died. Her psychiatric Dr. Silberling, however, discharges her telling that she has resolved her issues. Her father and successful writer, Steven, brings her back home in an isolated mansion nearby the coast. Anna finds that her mother’s former nurse, Rachel Summers, is her stepmother now. Anna meets her beloved sister, Alex, swimming in the sea. She discovers that Steven has not delivered the letters and CDs that Alex had sent to her. As time moves on, Anna is haunted by ghosts and she believes that Rachel killed her mother.
